RIP Phife Dawg

Rest In Power Phife

Midnight Marauders is one of those albums for me. The Love Movement was slept on and many of those tracks were the soundtrack to a time in my life. I discovered great jazz music trying to recreate the vibe of The Low End Theory. I knew that Hip-Hop didn’t have to be just one way listening to People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. I didn’t check out Beats, Rhymes, and Life until way later and was surprised at how much I related. I’ve purchased albums from countless artists who directly cite Tribe as an influence, and then albums from artists that those artists influenced–the Hip-Hop DNA is strong. One of my greatest Hip-Hop moments was when I was able to get an on stage view of A Tribe Called Quest’s reunion show at Rock The Bells. Phife Dawg was instrumental in all of that.

Rest in Power to Malik Isaac Taylor, better known as Phife Dawg. Bless up!

DeRay Mckesson

DeRay Mckesson

DeRay McKesson is best known for his activism and protest in the #BlackLivesMatter movement, his Campaign Zero proposals, and now his campaign to become the next mayor of Baltimore, MD.

We had the chance to speak with DeRay about his upbringing in Baltimore and his connection to the city, and we reminisced on the shared Baltimorean experiences of The Big Phat Morning Show, Shake and Bake, K-Swift, club music, and more.

We speak on a variety of other topics as well, such as addiction, education, politics and what it’s like to campaign, and his conversation with President Barack Obama. We also get into some of the points of his detailed platform which outlines his plans once in office.

We apologize for the shaky audio, but this episode with one of the most interesting, polarizing, and important figures in modern civil rights is a must listen.

You can learn more about DeRay and his plans for Baltimore at www.derayformayor.com.

We’re all over the place on this episode, hence the title. Before our conversation with Stone Mecca/Tru James, we chopped it up about everything from DMX to Nas albums to wack production on certain artists’ catalog. If you enjoy good Hip-Hop talk, check it out.
