WillGil of Hip Hop Review Podcast

June 4, 2017 by singodsuperior Leave a Comment

WillGil is one-half of the Hip Hop Review Podcast, where he and his co-host VonteThePro discuss new and throwback mainstream albums in the Hip Hop world. It is a light, engaging, and honest podcast. Both WillGil and VonteThePro provide thoughtful and concise reviews of albums and mixtapes—all while expressing preconceived notions that Will and Vonte (and all of us) have when listening to a new album.

WillGil took some time to chat with us about his upbringing on the West Coast and the inception of the Hip Hop Review Podcast. We also get into some of WillGil’s ups and downs in his podcasting career to-date, which ranges from the difficulty of preparing and reviewing not-so-good albums and mixtapes, reviewing brand new projects in the midst of the “streaming wars,” to receiving a mention from Peter Rosenberg.

60 East

May 29, 2017 by singodsuperior Leave a Comment

60 East is an Indie Hip-Hop artist from Ontario, California with an inspirational story. This Inland Empire emcee has gone through dark periods like many artists. However, 60 had what it takes to make it through the “grey area” and achieve his dreams of making an impact on the stage as well as business panels.

I talk to 60 East about his upbringing in Ontario, big influences on his life and most of his discography. I also discuss his approach to the music business and his artistry – which is greatly influenced by Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hour thesis.

60 East’s album 10,000 Hours: a Story of Success is available wherever you stream music. Keep up with 60 at www.sixtyeast.net/.
He too has a dope podcast I suggest you check out: www.sixtyeast.net/podcast

The (Rap) Evolution of Gucci Mane

May 14, 2015 by singodsuperior Leave a Comment

I remember in 2005 sitting on my couch watching MTV Jams. About 80% of what played I did not like. However, I liked Lil Rob’s “Summer Nights” for whatever reason. I like it till this day. Perhaps the primary song I despised was Gucci Mane’s “So Icy.” I felt it was just too elementary for people to listen to, but I trucked on and waited for the next thing to show for the hundredth time, which was probably Lil Rob and AZ’s “The Come Up.” But what do you expect for a teenager whose primary goal in life was to collect every underground Bizzy Bone album?

Matter of fact, Bizzy dropped “Speaking in Tongues” the same year, following his “speaking in tongues” on KPFT-FM in Houston earlier in 2005.

Gucci Mane’s rise in 2005 was overshadowed with the reign of Young Jeezy’s “Thug Motivation 101.” Jeezy (and Boosie) was what you heard in my parts for quite some time, but we know Gucci Mane was constantly working as much as Jeezy.

Even with the critical acclaim he has received, more that what I thought, Gucci Mane’s legacy has been somewhat overlooked between Young Jeezy’s success and his legal troubles. I have never cared for Gucci, but I have to admit that he has done one thing that many Hip-Hop fans want their favorite artists to do, evolve.

The only other post I have found on Gucci’s evolution involves his belly that complex posted in 2012. In lieu of that, here are some songs that show Gucci’s evolution.
